This morning, we had our third teacher training session. It went pretty well, I think. We were teaching them how to use the ABC books and the story books that the team here has produced. The teachers that we're training really aren't used to a real structured, systematic way of teaching, so they end up teaching way too much during a class and not really focussing on one particular letter or part of reading... so no one ends up learning all that much. So today we gave them a nice step by step way to go through the letters. We gave them lots of time to practice teaching each other, so hopefully the lessons will stick in their minds :)
I really enjoy these teacher training sessions - it's so much fun to get out there and get into something that's really tangible and is really doing something to help in these church schools! Plus, I just really love to teach, and it's fun to be able to try to help the participants in the course understand things and learn more.
Last week, I taught them some different kinds of games and activities that they could do in the classroom, rather than the "repeat after me" style of teaching. Jackie had her camera, so here's a picture of me and Amos playing a round of Bingo with the teachers.
And, just because that picture's not terribly cute, here's a cute one of little Zane Khawaija.
He's already getting kind of big! But he's still too small to catch that pesky rat that I keep seeing in the kitchen at lunch time! Even though Richard had his killer flip flop AND a wrench to back the kitty up, Zane still chickened out on catching that big ol' kitchen rat. I guess I'll just have to keep fattening up that kitty so he's a bit bigger than the rats...
