I told you something exciting always comes up...

On Sunday evening, an American couple (well, I assumed they're American, but could potentially be Canadian) came by here. They had heard through another girl living on our compound here that I was interested in finding a kitten. So they came to offer their little kitten to me - a three month old FEMALE cat. Well, I'm not interested in figuring out how to spay a cat on our kitchen table, nor am I interested in caring for a bunch of kittens. So I said no thanks, even though it would be perfect to take this little kitten, who's been loved by a couple of North Americans since it was a tiny little thing.

But this evening, just as we were sitting in the porch thinking about getting some dinner together, this same couple drove up... and with them was the cutest little black kitten. They came out, and declared that the cat is actually a boy cat! I called over Grace, the farm girl and male animal parts expert, and she confirmed that yes, indeed, this is a boy cat!

So I took him, then and there, on the spot :) And just today I had been thinking about a good cat name... and I had one all picked out already! So now, introducing, "Zane" the cat.
So once Zane settled in a little, we went over to the kitchen to start making some dinner. Jackie, in her understated British fashion, exclaimed, "Oh, a rat!". The poor little rat was trapped in behind the jerry cans and water barrels. So of course, now that we have a cat in the house, we had to get him used to our guesthouse rats ASAP. Grace scampered off to find Zane, and we put him down to have a head to head with the rat. Even though it was just a little rat, Zane still needed a little help from Richard and his flip flop to actually kill the rat. Good old Richard is a real trooper, stomping on a rat with his broken flip flop. We sure do like that guy... but give Zane a few days, and Richard's going to have some competition in the rat hunting territory!

Once the little rat was good and dead, we left him on the floor in the dining room to see if Zane would develope a taste for rat. He just knocked it around a bit, and then prefered to move on to his own dinner of left over stew! Of course, being the good new mother that I am, I had to take photos of Zane's first rat!
Grace and I got some dirt from the garden to make a little kitty box for him, and we've put a bowl of water in our room. His former family said he likes to sleep with people, so we'll keep him in here for the night and see how he does! I'm off to play with my new friend :)
