This evening, we watched "The Man from Snowy River" with the students. It was a full house in the "cinema" (otherwise known as the "classroom") tonight for this one. I've seen the movie a gizzilion times (for some reason, it seems to be a favourite amongst missionary-types!), but never in a group of 25 African men. And that, my friends, makes it worthwhile watching again!
Have you ever heard a room full of grown men giggling like little girls? If you haven't, just gather a bunch of Africans and watch the scene when dear Jess starts professing her undying love for Jim on the mountain top, after he has just rescued her from the cliff. Giggling like little girls!
They also really got into the horse chase scenes, and were quite enthusiastic cheering on the cowboys!
I think they really got into it, because, well, frankly, it moves pretty darn slowly, and even with the crazy Aussie accents and references to obscure things like "wallaby stew", I think the English was still slow enough for them to get into it. Plus, have you ever noticed how many scenes there are in that movie with no dialogue at all? Just running horses and sunsets.
But, it did make me a bit homesick for the Stampede Parade, which happened today! Happy Stampede, Calgary!
