Jet Lag

Today, I slept.  I had the most glorious Sunday afternoon nap!  I was dead to the world, even dead to my lovely roommate’s movements, for almost an hour and a half.  In my world, that’s a bit odd.  And it makes me think that somehow, I’ve tired myself out!  But in trying to figure out what on earth is tiring me out so much, I figured out that I think I have jet lag.

Even though I haven’t crossed any time zones since January, I think my poor brain is still trying to catch up with my body, which has been jetting all over the place since January!

I enjoyed Christmas in Canada with my family and left again for Africa in January.
Since stepping on the plane in Canada in January,  I have spent a total of 5 weeks in my usual place in Jb, which included a move of my household stuff and settling into my new house.  I have spent a over 12 weeks elsewhere, living in guesthouses, hotels, other people’s houses, and conference centres.  I’ve slept in 8 different beds, in addition to my own bed.  I have boarded 12 different planes, and been in 4 different countries.  All since January!

And now, I’m settled in a Conference centre here on the outskirts of Nairobi, where I will be for the next 7 weeks.  At least, I hope I will be here for the next 7 weeks!  I’m here helping to teach a literacy course for folks from several different African countries, to help equip them to run literacy programs in their own countries.  However, I missed the first week of classes because I had been asked to go to Uganda to help teach a group of folks in the Uganda office about how to use a particular computer program, which helps make Primers :)

As my faithful readers will know, I happen to end up spending quite a lot of time in Uganda now and again, so I feel quite at home there, and I know lots of the folks in the office there, too.  So it was great to be there for the week.  My buddy also left me her trusty steed – the faithful Corona that had carried us all the way to Kabong and back – which I used to ferry myself and a colleague back and forth to nice restaurants each evening!  So not only did I get to have fun teaching a crash course in literacy and phonetics and how IT can help with those things, I also got to eat some good food! Plus, I had an entire apartment to myself - my own bedroom, a sitting room with a couch and a chair, a kitchen, and a bathroom with hot water :)

Not a bad way to spend a week, I would say… even though my Montanan buddies were missing :(
