Man, things are getting a little too "normal" around here! Or maybe they're not really all that "normal", it's just that I'm so used to things as they are, I'm not seeing anything funny or abnormal to blog about these days!
I had a productive morning today - I got to take a new computer out of a box and get some of the preliminary bits set up so that a "real" computer geek can finish it up remotely so that one of the translation teams can start using it. So it was quite fun to take all the bits out - I got to unwrap all the bits and undo all those little twist ties from the cords. It was almost like Christmas all over, except that the present was just something for me to work on, rather than for me to just play with :) But there's just something about unwrapping new stuff that I love! (Actually, I just love "stuff" in general. I'm a bit of a "stuff" person, so it's probably a good thing I have the lifestyle that I do - otherwise, I'd probably be drowning under a pile of stuff - just ask my parents - their basement is full of my stuff!).
Anyways, stuff aside, once I finished unpacking that computer and starting to do some installation work on it, I had to go and help one of our translators who is taking some online courses. I've grown up with doing all sorts of things online, so the process of taking an online course isn't really new to me. And there are a lot of bits that go with it which I think I've taken for granted that I know. Things like which username to log in with, which "forums" you have to "post" to, and how to submit assignments using an online form. If you haven't grown up with the Internet or computers, these things are actually pretty difficult to get your mind around! And then, add on top the fact that the guy I was helping is not a native English speaker... it's all quite a challenge! So I sat with him for an hour to get him logged in and an assignment submitted. It's so good for me to sit with someone and go through something like that, because it does remind me of how much I take for granted sometimes with the computers!
And it has suddenly gotten very late... I will continue this tomorrow... though it might actually become rather anti-climactic that way :(
