You can watch this little video about Ethiopian children learning to read. Sadly, this sort of rote "learning" is how so many children in Africa "learn" to read. Sigh. We're hoping to make some headway with this sort of thing! Anyways, they're making great strides with their Donkey Library project in Awassa. Notice how their most popular book is the only one that's published using the mother tongue of the people (Sidamo, in this case), rather than Amharic or English?!
