A new month...

... is here, so I guess I should blog!  Sorry that I haven't blogged much... not for lack of something to blog about, but, well, I guess I've just been enjoying my own little house so much that I haven't really been sitting around engrossed in my computer!  Other things to do - things to unpack, furniture to arrange, curtains to sew...  and then of course there are dishes to wash and laundry to do and all that.  I've realized that without a housemate, when I cook, I actually have to wash my own dishes, too!  Plus, in my new house, when the electricity goes out, the internet goes out, too.  So that has severely cut down on my internetting time, since there hasn't been very much city electricity at all in the past few weeks.

But things are going well.  Just busy.  Busy getting my house all set up the way I want it.  Busy getting back into work.  Busy getting ready to go again!  I'm off to Nairobi for a workshop on Sunday.

It's been really nice to be back "home" and see my friends and colleagues, and get back into the swing of things here.  I think I would be happier if it were slightly cooler, though.  43C during the day, and cooling down to 30C at night does not a happy camper make.  At least it's a dry heat, though, and your sweat evaporates almost as soon as it hits your skin!  I much prefer that to the constant wet, mouldy feeling that you get even when it's a bit cooler during the rainy season.

I also got to go to a wedding on the weekend.  The son of our neighbor got married.  It was actually one of the saddest weddings I've ever been to. I've never seen a bride looking so utterly miserable!  The wedding actually started about 4 hours late, and I'm thinking it's because the bride was simply refusing to get dressed and get to the church.  Some (of course not all!) marriages here are certainly not "love matches", but instead, the bride goes to the man who offers the most cows, or is the most advantageous in terms of status and position of the entire family.  I've never seen a more awkward kiss (which, in itself, was scandalous because people certainly don't kiss in public in these parts!).  I really felt so sad for the poor girl, and just found myself sitting there and praying that the man will treat her kindly and that somehow, she will find peace, and even a bit of joy in her married life.

Anyway, I will try to blog a bit more, now that I'm feeling nicely settled in my house!  And yes, there will be pictures to come.

But at the moment, I'm going to go and find a really big glass of very cold water...
